Read a Record in Your Language User Guide
Overview
Read a Record in Your Language lets you translate a catalogue record on demand into a language you prefer, directly from the record's own page. Instead of leaving the platform to paste text into a separate translation site, you choose a target language and the descriptive text is translated for you in place. This makes collections more accessible to international researchers and to anyone more comfortable in another language. The translation is produced through the AHG AI gateway, the platform's single, governed route for AI features.
What it does
The record translation feature provides on-demand translation of the descriptive content of a record:
- It works on the record you are currently viewing - there is nothing to set up in advance.
- You pick a target language, and the record's descriptive text (such as the title and scope-and-content) is translated for reading.
- The translation is generated when you ask for it, so you only translate the records you actually need.
- All translation requests are handled through the AHG AI gateway, which is the platform's central, managed path for AI services. You do not need to configure any external service yourself.
How to use it
- Open the record you want to read.
- Choose the translate option on the record (the "read this in your language" control on the record page).
- Select your target language.
- Wait a moment while the translation is produced, then read the translated text in place.
- Switch back to the original at any time, or choose a different target language to translate again.
Good to know
- The original record is never changed. Translation is for reading only; it does not overwrite or replace the catalogued text. The authoritative description remains in its original language.
- Translations are machine-generated and are intended to aid understanding. For formal citation, legal, or scholarly use, rely on the original-language description and, where needed, a professional human translation.
- All requests route through the AHG AI gateway, so translation benefits from the platform's central AI handling - there is no separate setup, account, or external service for you to manage.
- Translation quality depends on the source text. Clear, well-written descriptions translate more accurately than terse or abbreviated notes.
